- Two days ago, I gave a talk at Angel Bootcamp titled “Unicorns and Tom Brady – Picking Winning Founders”. The purpose of the talk was to illuminate some data around founders, and what characterizes successful ones. It was meant to be directional, and help folks who don’t have the benefit of being a professional investor and getting a “gut” for great founders through pattern recognition. A couple points and takeaways: 1. I took a chunk of data from Silicon Alley Insider’s Digital Media Top 100. It was as good a dataset as any for promising companies. But obviously isn’t exhaustive and definitely skews towards my areas of focus, which are digital media and internet enabled businesses. 2. My partner Lee has blogged at length about our love for Tom Brady entrepreneurs. Read more about it on his blog. 3. My partner Dave has blogged about authentic entrepreneurs, which is very important to us. As I said in my talk – a 40-year old enterprise sales executive would never conceive of AirBnB and make it work. 4. See my interview with Matt Lauzon to hear some crazy stories about a young, first time entrepreneur who is creative and hustles. 5. Here’s a link to the academic paper and the book around evaluating human capital that I referenced. They are excellent reads. 6. - I had the pleasures of sitting down with Matt Lauzon last week to talk about the lessons he’s learned as the founder and CEO of Gemvara. I’m hoping this will be the first of several chats with some of the new crop of entrepreneurs and investors in BOS that are making things happen. Many thanks to Cort Johnson for helping me make this happen. We talked about a lot of things – getting noticed, developing as a CEO, etc. But the best part was his story about “Paying it Forward”. I get the chills thinking about it. I’ve embedded that segment of the conversation above. Below are links to two other segments to our conversation. By way of context, Gemvara is an online retailer of customized jewelry that is growing very rapidly. The company was seeded by Highland Capital and raised their series A and B from Highland and Canaan Partners. Matt looks a little giddy in the interview because that morning, he had just signed a term sheet from Balderton Capital for a $15M series C round to scale the business. Our chat is structured into three parts, and I will point out some of the gems below. Part I: Getting Gemvara Started Matt founded Gemvara as an undergraduate student at Babson. What set Matt apart from other students starting companies and entering business plan competitions was his willingness to do the straightforward but slightly intimidating things that you need to get noticed. See 1:36 to hear Matt talk about how he coordinated a tactical strike on Bob Davis’ inbox shortly before his meeting with him. See 2:52 to hear how Matt cold called the VP of engineering at Bladlogic shortly after the company’s $800M acquisition and convinced him to join him as CTO when the company was not much more than a man with a plan. Part II: Developing as an Entrepreneur (and getting replaced) I ask a terribly inappropriate question up front about getting replaced as CEO shortly after their series A. See the first 2 1/2 minutes to hear what it was like to be replaced as CEO, and then to come back a few years later. Why did it happen? What changed? Why was he equipped to come back? Some other great sound bites: “I know more today than I did yesterday. But less than I’ll know tomorrow.” “When the first great ecommerce companies were built, no one had ecommerce experience” Part III: Paying It Forward Matt gives his perspective on the state of the Boston startup ecosystem as a someone from “a small town in Maine”. He speaks candidly about the many good things and some of the things that are potentially more difficult. He closes with an incredible story at 3:38. It’s definitely the BEST PART OF THE INTERVIEW and talks about those who helped him early on and what kept him going in the really hard and discouraging moments. By the way, in the spirit of “Paying it Forward” Matt is organizing an event in mid-May called Ruby Riot. Details are sparse, but based on the stealthy twitter chatter, I think it will be the “It” event for the local tech community in May. Hope this video is interesting and instructive. And frankly, we don’t settle for anything less than excellence in every group in the company, and we have the self-honesty to admit when we’re wrong and the courage to change. - I once drove cross country with a friend, and we tried to play whiffleball in every state we entered. But we never figured out how to throw these kinds of pitches. Rob alexbain: Had a conversation with my buddy over lunch about Whiffleball, and he mentioned there were crazy videos on YouTube of pitchers that are like magicians. I love in this video, once it gets to the point where there’s live batters, how sure they are that the ball is outside, and then they just drop their heads when they hear the tin sound. I had a “Think Different” poster on my college dorm room and wrote about this campaign in my business school essay. Cheezy as it is to say, that campaign made a big impact on me as a 19-year old kid. - When Penn recovers from the beating he took Saturday – and if UFC management is smart, it will give him a lengthy vacation to let his wounds heal – he’ll face an exceptionally difficult title defense against Kenny Florian. Two years ago, that bout would have been one-sided in Penn’s favor. But Florian has steadily improved and there isn’t a part of his game where he’s weak. Penn would be the favorite, but after watching the way he took apart Stevenson at UFC 92, it would hardly be a shock to see Florian away with the lightweight belt around his waist. February 2, 2009
- I am so excited about this Saturday’s UFC Fight between George St. Pierre and BJ Penn. I started paying attention to Mixed Martial Arts back in 1999 when my friend Michael Lane started practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s really an amazing sport. It is pretty violent, but the safety record so far has been very good (much better than boxing). This fight brings together the reigning Welterweight Champion against the reigning Lightweight Champion. You would think that this would be an easy match for the Welterweight Champ because of the size/strength advantage. But BJ Penn has had a lot of success fighting bigger guys and is probably very comfortable at 170. Here’s how I break down the fight: Technique: Draw GSP and BJ are both incredibly well rounded fighters. While BJ is probably the better grappler, GSP is probably a slightly better striker. But don’t forget that GSP is an excellent wrestler and has easily dispatched many jiu jitsu specialists. Likewise, remember that BJ is an excellent boxer with a ton of knockout power. Athleticism and Fitness: GSP GSP is the bigger fighter and is known for excellent conditioning. BJ has been known to gas out in long fights, and may struggle with the larger, stronger GSP in a 5-round bout. I’d say that the longer the fight goes on, the most GSP has an advantage. Mental – BJ As dominant as GSP is, he has lost fights against far inferior fighters in the past because of lapses in judgement. BJ on the other hand is extremely hungry, and is the underdog in this fight. He has much more to gain, and GSP has a lot to lose, so I’d say BJ has an advantage here. - Wow! I just watched the Dark Knight. It was an awesome movie, but this preview is what really made my night. What made the Watchmen so revolutionary was the depth and authenticity of the characters. It’s too bad that it took so long to get this into the theaters. - Great stuff, although my wife didn’t know what was going on for half of it. Makes me realize how much of a sub-culture the web media world is. The folks parodied in this show were mini-celebs for a brief moment… but there is such a huge portion of the population that never noticed and don’t really care. Entertainment is great… but there is still tons of stuff that can be done to solve the real problems of real people. September 9, 2007
