A friend’s post about Wright
My friends Roger and Frank have done a little bit of work to try to wade through all the media sensationalism around Rev Wright’s comments and try to bring some balance into the discussion.
I for one really appreciate it. I hate how short sound bites end up villifying people, and I hate how Obama was really backed into a corner because of how big of a deal this has become.
I wouldn’t say “I support Rev. Jeremiah Wright” like he does.. but when I actually read Wright’s words as opposed to listen to clips or hear other people’s reactions, I’m not as offended as I’m “supposed to be”.
In fact, when you read/listen to Wright after the other evangelicals I posted below, you can see some common threads. (This what *I* got out of the discussion)
- America (or it’s brand of “freedom”) is NOT the hope of the world.
- Being Christian means caring about ALL people, especially the weak.
- No politician, not Bush, not Obama, not Clinton, not McCain, is the answer to our problems.
- The way we live our lives is more important than who we vote for.
These ideas do sound more palatable coming out of white mouths.
